Hannibal, S1 Ep 13

Hannibal, S1 Ep 13

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, the first week of #TwoWeeksOfHannibal ends now with the very last episode of the first season, Savoureux. So without any further ado, let's get started !

Savoureux

"Perhaps you didn't come here looking for a killer. Perhaps you came here to find yourself."
We all know that Hannibal told Will this sentence, but could we take a moment to turn it back and say that, maybe, Hannibal came here to admire his own work and what he accomplished ? As far as we know it, Lecter is prone to show-off, especially his culinary skills (made with humans, may I remind you)... And when he visits Will in the end of the episode, he plays epic opera mucis in his head, as a reminder of his pride in killing and accusing everybody else. He is really interested in making his life a masterpiece as much as he likes watching others (operas or murders, which inclines him to the most dangerous patients)... Just a thought...

"You're alone because you're unique.
- I'm as alone as you are."
As this is the final episode, we can see Hannibal's last move to accuse Will of his own murders. He spent days hiding human remains in his fish lures, manipulating and lying to everybody. Here, as he goes to Minnesota with Will, he is finally discovered and identified. However, as he kept everybody under his influence, he sends him to jail and makes accused by Jack Crawford of several murders. He even lied to his own psychiatrist about the fact that he wanted to help him - I don't know about you but I have two thoughts about this : either she knows about his murders (which is in my opinion quite clear), or he tries to convince her not to tell anything. In both cases, they are both in trouble, in my opinion...

"You have no traceable motive... which was why you were so hard to see."
This last episode also concludes the mystery of the deer that appeared during the whole season. Hannibal was indeed the deer hiding in Will's hallucinations and dreams as he was trying to figure out the real identity of the copycat of the murderers shown in the recently treated cases. I Googled myself the symbolism of the deer to understand why this animal had been chosen to represent Hannibal, and I found words along the lines of gentleness, intuition, sensibility, grace, and many others. It shows that not only Hannibal wanted to show himself with this traits, but that he has spent many years, and still does, hides behind this mask that he wants nobody to see behind.

Overall impression : A really great finale, in tone with the rest of the season, and may I end with a French word for it ? I don't have the translation in English, but may I say it was... grandiose.

Okay, that's it for this season of Hannibal ! See you soon for the second one !

And as usual, our last word... KIDNEYS !
