Broadchurch, S1 Ep2

Broadchurch, S1 Ep2

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, as #TwoWeeksOfBroadchuch keeps going (even if I'm currently busy in the mountain's trip until Thursday), here is the review for the series one, episode two ! So let's get started, shall we ?

Episode 2

"I'm pregnant.
- Have you told anyone ?"
So, the first very important information of this episode is the fact that Beth is now pregnant, only a while after the murder of her son. I am wondering how she could keep another child while she's mourning the loss of her son... It must be really difficult, as she's now going (as well as her entire family) into the second stage of mourning, anger. The tension among the Latimers has been increasing to a point where even the Reverend's help is denied (Beth tries to make him go away and Mark goes himself to punch him in the face just for showing his support). The grandma, however, tries to make him understand that it's not his fault.

"Don't say that.
- Don't say what ?
- No need to worry.
- Why not ?
- Don't reassure people. Let them talk."
We can see that in this particular scene how Ellie and Alec work differently. While Ellie tries to reassure people that she knows because she's been living with them in the same city for years, Alec wants the job to be done, and fast. He's manifesting some defiance towards the habitants of Broadchurch, that he treats all as suspects. This is the beginning of a conflict that had started in the first episode and will surely continue in the series... Ellie's compassionate methods and Alec's harsh ones are not really making the best team for the moment. Anyway, they try to do their best to catch Danny's murderer.

"Yeah, the whole place has been cleaned. But we've also found another set of prints by the sink. [...] They belong to Mark Latimer."
In this episode, the clear suspect for Danny's murder is his own father, Mark. He's been seen on a CCTV (cameras) footage on the cliff around the time when Danny was murdered. He, who lied about his alibi and pretended that he was working at the time when he was just "with a friend" on the cliff. And now that they found the camping-house where Danny was killed because of his blood and fingerprints found there, Mark is a serious suspect since his fingerprints were found there too. How will the situation get any better for the Latimers especially since Danny's sister has been found with drugs (and possible cash money) ? We will surely find out soon...

Overall impression : Great display of emotions and grief and hopelessness, a truly great episode. Again, I recommend Broadchurch with all my heart.

Okay, so that's it for today ! I hoped you enjoyed this post, and I will see you very soon for another one in this Broadchurch series !

And as usual, our last word... KIDNEYS !
