Broadchurch, S1 Ep5

Broadchurch, S1 Ep5

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, as #TwoWeeksOfBroadchurch keeps going, here is the review for the fifth episode of the first series. Without any further ado, here it comes !

Episode 5

"Police are hoping the reconstruction will jog people's memories for vital evidence surrounding Danny's death."
In the beginning of this episode, there is a reconstruction of the night when Danny Latimer disappeared before his body was found on the beach at Broadchurch. Even if they don't have a lot of evidence and possible suspects, the police are hoping to have some testimonies quite soon as the CCTV footage is rare and thus, evidence was erased because of the tape system that erases to record new footage. The investigation seems quite complicated as many people still have secrets and some people are suspicious (especially Susan Wright for the moment).

"You should get away from here, Jack. It's not safe."
We can also see in this episode that Jack's life was put in the media and the press. He is considered as a paedophile even if he only had one affair with a girl that he married and had a kid with later on (which shows that she might have been consentent, even if having a relationship with an under-sixteen-year-old is statutory rape), and now that he had served for his crime, people still blame him and force him to commit suicide because he can't stand the loss of his own son that he had tried to replace with affection towards other boys. The media manipulating his story to sell more newspaper is atrocious and things should have been left in the past, however, people are quick to judge without thinking about the consequences of their actions.

"But I can't, can I ? I don't want to lose you, Beth. But I think I already have.
- I'm pregnant."
Finally, Beth tells Mark about the pregnancy. Mark wants her to keep the baby but she doesn't want to because she only wants her Danny, and not another baby that in her opinion would replace him. As we've seen earlier, she keeps drinking alcohol which is bad for her baby, she doesn't seem to care anymore and her only feeling right now is anger. However, she tries to bargain once again in the end of the episode by looking at pictures of her son when he was a baby and going to see in some boxes some toys he used to play with when we was younger. But that doesn't really seem to help as she only gets nostalgic, just like Mark, about the time when everything was easy, before Danny was killed actually.

Overall impression : Another great moral lesson about the human nature and trying to cope with tragedies, it's another really great episode.

Okay, that's it for today's post, I hoped you enjoyed it ! I will see you soon with another one !

And as usual, our last word... KIDNEYS !
