In The Flesh, S1 Ep1

In The Flesh, S1 Ep1

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, welcome to a new series of reviews, with some In The Flesh ! I was hugely recommended to watch it, so here's my chance to finally have my thoughts on it ! So here we go !

Episode 1

"I am a Partially Deceased Syndrome sufferer.
- And ?
- And what I did in my... untreated state was not my fault."
Right from the beginning, we have the plot given to us : a virus infected humans, transforming them into... well, "zombies", and rose from the grave. Then, they started to attack the population, before they found a cure to their situation. However, we can see that in Kieren's case, the guilt coming from what he did as a zombie is "crippling", as he said himself, and the rehabilitation in society can be difficult from these PDS sufferers as they have to take a continous treatment while seeing the hatred from the population who still wants to kill them. After all, that's the way it is : humans, usually killing and hunting what's different from them. No wonder why some of them are really angry at people who don't want them back as normal human beings.

"Things have changed in Roarton, haven't they, Sue ?
- Yeah."
As I said just before, the city the action takes place in is quite conservative and quite hateful towards PDS sufferers, and the vicar is leading them and still treating them as threats even when they take their medication correctly and it's been proven that they go back normally into society. But when you know that some of them were dead for a long time, not only it's difficult for their families to take them back in, but the lack of proper follow-up of PDS sufferers (have you seen that woman with barely any training ? She's going to f*ck up something, I swear, either she will die or cause the rising of a PDS sufferer because of her total lack of training). Anyway, since 2009, things have changed, there is an armed milice going in the streets, and nothing will be back as normal as before.

"They killed us too, during the Rising. They'd blow our heads off without a second thought. But no, that's "defending humanity" - that's OK."
Last but not least, we can see that there is a group of PDS sufferers who are kind of hateful towards humans, as they believe that they shouldn't be treated by the society. They sell "blue oblivion", a sort of drug that give them back their untreated state, as they are proud of it. When you know that the vicar and the HVF hunt and kill innocent PDS sufferers (have you seen that old lady called Maggie at the end of the episode ? Killed just because she was different. She hadn't done anything wrong to begin with). So, now the question is : how many PDS sufferers will join this movement ? Can there be a second Rising ? I think that this is what is bound to happen now : a new war between the PDS sufferers, and those who defend them and the other humans who want to kill them, and the PDS sufferers who choose to go back to their untreated state to kill everybody around...

Overall impression : Great concept that changes A LOT from the typical "zombie actions", and which is really cricital towards untolerant, unacceptant people. A lesson to remember when is comes to accept people that are different from us.

Okay, that's it for today, I hope that you enjoyed this post, and I will see you very soon with another one, I hope !

And as usual, our last word : KIDNEYS !
