Childhood Story #5

Childhood Story #5

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, here's to another Childhood Story ! That time when I remember memories from a distant past and decide to put it here for everybody to see !

So let's get started, shall we ?

That Time When I Stopped A Rollercoaster

So, I was four or five years old. Near my house, there's a stadium, and every year, there's this fair that happens in the end of June that's quite funny since I lived in a very small village (well, by small I mean between 10,000 and 15,000 people). I mean, it's a little distraction from the typical boring lifestyle I was used to. (Living near a retirement house doesn't help. Poor souls trapped there, waiting for death to come. They could do something fun but no one seems to care.)

Anyways, my mom decided to make me go with my step-dad. We went on that little rollercoaster that wasn't even that high, and it was even so small that they would make us do three laps for one setting.

But I really, really didn't like it.

After only one turn, I started to get sick and panicky, up to the point that the guy operating down there had... well, to stop the thing to let me go out before he would start again and do the two remaining laps for the people who were on the ride with us.

We went back home. I was released to not me in this nightmare anymore, but the way my mom looked at me in utter disapproval for the rest of the night before we went to bed was also very scary.

Since, my mom has been so reluctant to let me on a rollercoaster. I mean, even now, to get me on one, you have to be very convincing. It's not like I'm one of those freaks that hates fun and getting scared or anything. But I guess it's just like horror movies : getting scared just for the sake of getting scared isn't really my cup of tea.

Related stories that I think you'll like :

When I was eight or nine, we went to another park (with some other kids, not my family) and me & a bunch of other girls also stopped a rollercoaster after only one turn out of three. Man, the monitor getting there with is wasn't pleased at all.

A couple of years after the first incident (by that I mean more like ten years, when I was 15), while in holidays in Canada, we went in this park in Montréal and there was a gigantic wood rollercoaster with a "soft" mode and a "hard" mode. My little brother & step-dad did both, my mom & me did just the soft one. Even with that, I got more scared than my mom (which is unusual since she's very jumpy) and I couldn't breathe. My whole family called me a "sissy" and mocked me, but I was dead serious. I couldn't breathe.

Anyways, that's it for today, I really hope that you enjoyed this post and I'll see you very soon with another one !

The Uncanny Fail #5

The Uncanny Fail #5

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, today, I'm here to talk about another fail of mine ! Yay for originality !

Anyways, I just wanted to tell you my experience... of being left-handed. So here we go !

The Left-Handed Life

(Or : how the fact that you have a different dominant hand and being in that minority will F*CK YOU UP for LIFE.)

So, a couple of facts about left-handed problems that actually exist and are considered as discrimination :
- Being left-handed was considered, for a very long time, to be "friends with the devil". In schools, left-handed people were forced to act like their right-handed peers to conform to the society's norms, that dictated that being left-handed was called "rebellion", "non-conforming", basically, evil.
- I don't know about you, but let's look at the words left and right for a second. Left is also the past tense of the verb to leave. Basically, left-handers were left out, while being right-handed was considered... to be right. In French, we have gauche and droite. The French expression "être gauche" means "to be a little clumsy". Droit/droite is also an adjective to say "straight" (like a straight line). In Italian, we have sinistra and destra, derivated from the Latin dexter (which means right), and sinistra, which means sinister. No wonder why left-handers were considered to be friends with the devil himself.
- Only 10 % of the population is left-handed. We are literally derivating from the norm.
- Objects/products marketed towards left-handers are usually more expansive than the EXACT SAME PRODUCTS made for right-handers. Economic stuff, quite basic, because less people buying = individual costs more expansive = higher prices.

Now, my personal fails, so you can swallow that pill better !
- GODDAMN SCISSORS COME AT ME & I'LL FIGHT YOU (seriously though, now I cut everything with my right hand, since I've been CONDITIONED to do so).
- THIS COOKING THINGY WOULD WORK IF IT WERE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION (but no this is made for right-handers hahaha).
- OH GOD I BURNED MYSELF WITH THE IRON AGAIN WTF (because it was on the wrong side for me as a left-handed person).
- HOW DO YOU FOLLOW A TUTORIAL ON YOUTUBE/FOLLOW THE ADVICE OF A FRIEND TO DO YOUR HAIR/MAKE-UP WHEN THEY'RE LITERALLY ALL RIGHTIES AND YOU'RE A LEFTY THOUGH ??? (really it's been bugging me a lot so if any lefty wants to show me how to do stuff it'll help thanks).
- HOW DO YOU PLAY ON CONSOLES AS A LEFTY THOUGH ??? (like how do you use the pad on a tactile screen/use the controllers made for righties when there's no mode ever for lefties ???).

Anyways, that's it for today ! I really hope that you enjoyed this post and I'll see you very soon with another one !

Powercry

Powercry

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, today I'm going to talk about a subject that I've always wanted to talk about : Powercry, and why it's important to let yourself cry when you're sad.

Some people are in touch with their emotions. Others aren't. But when you're bottling up your emotions and trying to avoid them, you end up snapping out in the end.

For my entire life, I've been told not to cry. I was forbidden to laugh too hard, to yell too loud, or to cry visibly. My family has taught me to bottle things inside me and very often, I would be crying myself to sleep. I wouldn't show them my emotions and I would appear as a stuck-up, heartless, soulless, emotionless bitch.

I remember, at the age of 15, I was going back from a trip to Canada with my family. My uncle had picked us up and we were going back from the airport to the house. My little brother and I were sharing jokes and laughing like monkeys covered in laughing powder. Our mom ended up yelling at us and telling us to stop laughing for the rest of the trip. We didn't laugh for the rest of the day.

So, I'm here to tell you : it's okay to cry. Actually, it's even therapeutic. By releasing your emotions with just a ten-minute crying, you're releasing all the pressure you've been accumulating during all this time and that you were trying to avoid until you would break down and throw a tantrum, very often at someone that didn't deserve it.

I mean, I've been crying myself a lot lately. There's a lot of pressure going from all sides, my new life in a business school is hella hectic and I'm still lonely and friendless as before. And I'm not going to lie : I've been crying myself to sleep a lot lately.

But I'm not ashaled of this. Actually, I feel a lot better after this. And usually, a little breakdown is way better than a big one. After a little powercry, I usually give myself a treat, I go on the Internet to find something distracting and funny to laugh a little.

Oh, and also, if you're doing this too, please don't forget : HYDRATE YOUSELF after a powercry. Crying dehydrates you and you need water to recharge yourself. Also, have some bananas for the potassium. When you cry, not only you lose water, but you lose also potassium (just like when you sweat, actually *gross mental picture ahead*). Some banana chips are a very sweet and healthy snack to treat yourself.

Just remember : ALLOW YOURSELF TO FEEL. LET YOUR EMOTIONS OUT. BE IN TOUCH WITH ALL YOUR EMOTIONS NO MATTER GOOD OR BAD.

And last but not least : if you're going through a hard time right now, remember : THIS WON'T BE THIS BAD FOREVER. Good days are ahead, just waiting for you. You just have to see them.

Okay, that's it for today ! I really hope that you enjoyed this post and I'll see you very soon with another one !

Why Queerbaiting Is Wrong

Why Queerbaiting Is Wrong

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, today I'm going to talk about something VERY WRONG and VERY IMPORTANT. Whether you're in the LGBTQ+ community or not, you SHOULD be reading this.

Because I WON'T repeat myself. I am SO pissed off.

Do you know what queer-baiting is ? Well, it's TWO things : the first one is implying you're queer or in a queer relationship in order to attract potential queer viewers and gain their sympathy. (And on that point, some people, I am afraid, ARE winning my compassion and sympathy, queer or not.) The second one is DENYING any "proof" or "evidence" of such queerness or queer relationship.

It's been shown in multiple shows like BBC Sherlock (2010, Moffat&Gatiss), with Moffat HEAVILY implying that John and Sherlock (Johnlock) MAY BE canon and then saying IN THE MIDDLE OF A FUCKING INTERVIEW that "the fans made it all up". NO NO NO. (By the way I have my therory about Sherlock but that's another point.) A second example is OBVIOUSLY Dean + Castiel (Destiel) in Supernatural (2005, Kripke). (THAT scene in season 8 where Castiel was supposed to tell Dean "I love you" and ended up saying "I need you" WILL DESTROY MY GAY ASS FOREVER I'M NOT SORRY.)

If you're wondering WHY THE FUCK I'm making this, well read this post : http://theuncannymary.tumblr.com/post/130549726617/listen-i-am-just-so-mad-about-danphil-right-now

I'm going to tell you WHY this is SO wrong. Queerbaiting is like luring us with a treat and then spanking us for wanting it.

Listen. There are THOUSANDS of queer people (younger, more vulnerable, more likely to be in the closet, less likely to accept themselves) that are looking up to these people, admiring them. They are their IDOLS, the people they see when they need comfort, the people they relate to. They WISH that these idols could UNDERSTAND what they're going through. They are looking up to a queer role-model to make themselves feel NORMAL, NOT A FREAK.

This is WHY so many YouTubers came out as gay this year. Because they wanted to set a precedent, they wanted to tell their audience that it's OKAY to be queer, to be YOURSELF, and that despite the struggles they went through during the discovery of their sexuality, it's NORMAL to be whoever you are and to love whoever you love. They are giving HOPE to their fans, and it's WONDERFUL.

Queerbaiting is EXACTLY the opposite. People doing this are TAKING HOPE AWAY. They are ruining queer youngster's lives. They are basically EVIL. Queer people are looking up to them, hoping that like the out-of-the-closet queer YouTubers now, they WILL "come out".

But they don't. And It's frustrating, because they feel like being gay is WRONG, DISGUSTING and GROSS. Exactly the opposite of what should be done nowadays.

Okay, that's it for today ! I really hope that you enjoyed this post and I'll see you very soon with another one !

Doctor Who, S9 Ep3

Doctor Who, S9 Ep3

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, here's the review for the third episode in the ninth series of Doctor Who ! Without any further ado, let's get started, shall we ?

Under The Lake

So, here are the three words I've picked today :

- Ghosts : So, in this episode, there are ghosts. Or sort of ghosts ??? Like I don't understand yet (they'll probably explain in the next episode), but these transmittors that are lost in space... This is very very spooky man. Anyways, these ghosts kill others and when they die, they also come back as ghosts to sort-of intensify a signal. Maybe they just want to go back "home" or something. In the end, this story is not finished, so maybe we'll have some more explanation later.

- Danger : Obviously, in this episode, there is a lot of danger, and thus, since Clara is going to leave in this series, so the mysteries and the dangers are "leveling up" in some way. The Doctor not knowing what's going on and Clara always looking for some danger is something very spooky in itself. Like we're more in a "Mummy In The Orient Express"-esque episode than something action-filled, and we're just left waiting for the next episode... next week.

- HOW CAN THE DOCTOR BE A GHOST ??? : In the end of episode, right at the end though, we see the Doctor's ghost coming where Clara and a part of the group who couldn't go with him in the TARDIS because they didn't have enough time. Anyways, now that's a bigger cliffhanger than the one in the end of The Magician's Apprentice ! How will this be solved ? Well, it will be, but... next time ! Because Moffat decided to FUCK IT ALL with loads of cliffhangers this series !

Overall impression : Another amazing episode, really, nothing bad to say about it. We'll see how things turn up in the next episode !

Anyways, that's it for today, I really hope that you enjoyed and I'll see you very soon with another one !

And as usual, our last word : KIDNEYS !

About OTPs – why do we ship people ?

About OTPs – why do we ship people ?

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, lately, I've been confronted to a problem. And of course, I had to solve it.

I've always wondered why the f*ck we ship people, in the end. I mean, it doesn't concern us, right ? We are in love... with somebody else's love ??? WTF ??? Why does this exist ? How did it appear and how does it affect our modern societies ?

Well, I had to make a little Internet work to find out.

Concerning the facts : the word « slash » which basically means smut has been coined with the Kirk/Spock pairing... fanfictions written by women. The word « ship » has been coined with the arrival of The X-Files, which also created the no-romo word for people who didn't want Mulder and Scully to be in a romantic relationship. (Spoiler : they are.)

And when you think about it, fanfictions were created even before the arrival of the Internet, by the means of specialised magazines where they were published and sent to people who « subscribed » to them, or were just given at different conventions. So, it's not a new trend invented by the Y generation. Sorry, but we didn't invent everything.

But when you think about it... Most people shipping pairs, whether in the past or in the present, have a very common trait, a simple characteristic : most of them are young, and/or single. Why, you may ask ?

It's because... and I've said it in a previous post...

« Somebody's OTP very often, if not always, says A LOT about what they desire in a relationship. »

I am a firm believer that our OTPs reflect our point of view about relationships and what we're looking for in them. Let's take an example... let's say... myself. I don't specifically have OTPs but there are some ships that I ship more than others, so let's talk about them, shall we ?

1- Mulder and Scully. If you don't know already, Mulder IS an INFP, just like me, and I've always related SO WELL to his character. If I ship him and Scully so much, it's because just like him, I'm looking for a little bit of reality in a relationship. I NEED someone to remind me of the mundane and clerical tasks that I find SO boring and annoying like paying taxes, going to the groceries, doing some work instead of procrastinating. Someone to remind me facts when I'm drifting away. Basically, I need a Scully in my life.

2- The Ninth/Tenth Doctor and Rose. I mean, this is quite obvious. Just like Rose, I live in a very dull reality and I need some time. Some escape. Some adventures that no one else would see. And then, what happens ? THE DOCTOR. Miracles happening everyday. We save the world. We go to unexplored parts of the universe. We kick ass. Really, who DOESN'T want to be the Doctor's companion, even just for a while ? It must be AMAZING !!! Basically, I NEED someone like the Doctor. Someone to show me wonders, no matter how small. Someone who can remind me how utterly beautiful life is.

3- Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham. Well, if you read my Hannibal reviews, you must know by now that I am a HARDCORE HANNIGRAM SHIPPER. Why, you may ask ? Becuse their relationship is so... like... they crave for the other person, right ? Their attraction is sudden, Will decides to change entirely to follow Hannibal. He decides to run away with him, to live with him. He apologises when he realises he's turned him to the police. He's inflexible about his feelings for him. Hannibal also surrenders JUST to let Will know where he is, always. Maybe I'm a Hannibal in need of a Will, in the end. *psychotic laughter echoes in the distance* Really, though. Someone's who's into me as much as I'm into them ? Being loved to the point of madness ? ALWAYS being there for the other person ? SIGN ME THE F*CK UP RIGHT NOW.

Anyways, what do YOU think about this ? Do you agree or nah ?
What's YOUR OTP and how is it related to your needs in a relationship ?

Okay, that's it for today ! I really hope that you enjoyed this post and I'll see you very soon with another one !

And as usual, our last word : KIDNEYS !

Writing Fiction As A Therapy

Writing Fiction As A Therapy

Hi everybody, Mary here.

So, if you follow me on Tumblr, you probably already know about the fact that I'm currently writing my very first long-length fiction novel. (Actually, it's been almost a year now, since I started last December and I'm not EVEN close to see the end for now...) And actually, while writing this, I realised something about my novel. Or more precisely, about my characters, and about me.

« Most of the time, the inspiration you get for a fiction is just around yourself. »
  • theuncannymary, while waiting for a hot chocolate to cool down

And by saying this, I'm not just talking about your surroundings, your culture, your country, your language, and all of that. I'm pretty sure that you already know that these factors do change the writer's perspective, and thus, their work in the end.

I'm talking about YOU. Yes, YOU, the person reading this and wondering how you got there.
Maybe you're just a lambda person who doesn't want to write a novel.
Or maybe you are one of these writers who want to get published one day.

For the latter, you'll realise, one day, that when you're editing your novel before sending it to a publishing house for the umpteenth time. Or maybe, just like me, you'll notice that while writing the novel. Maybe you'll want to change your characters, or even your story, the events that are about to happen, just to make sure that this doesn't happen. The characters that look like you. Not even physically. Maybe they don't have the same background, the same gender, the same age, the same sexual orientation, the same hobbies. Maybe they look NOTHING like you in the first place. But (and it's seen more obviously in first-person novels), when you look into their psychés, you'll see that they are JUST like you.

I've realised that a couple of months ago about some of my characters. Even if their story is VERY different from mine, their country, background, hobbies, and personalities, differ from me, their basic essence forms... me. In whole. Me, my family, our harsh relationships, the troubles we've been into. Sometimes, the little joys that life brings to us. And I actually liked it. I appreciate this « super-relatable » side in them that makes them comfortable to write. And in the end, it's like a threapy, for me, since I can release my very intense and deep emotions inside my work.

About the rest of the characters in my novel that aren't « me » ? Or the examples picked « around me » ? Well, they are the fillers : the people you wish were there in your life but aren't. The story you wish you could live but you can't. It's that something you're all longing for, something you heart desires but can't get. The little thing to fill the hole in your soul. I mean, even if you have NEVER written original fiction, maybe you have some ships. And do you know what I say about OTPs ?

« Somebody's OTP very often, if not always, says A LOT about what they desire in a relationship. »
  • theuncannymary, after finishing her hot chocolate

And that's why I say. Fiction writers, fanfiction writers, or non-writers. I believe (and maybe it's JUST because I'm an INFP with a type 4 – wing 5 Enneagram), that creative writing is a very powerful therapy that can be used by litterally anyone. I don't know about you, non-writer who's probably asking themselves what this post means. But you'll see, one day, that if you need a therapy...

A fiction is one of the most powerful ones.

Okay, that's it for today ! I really hope that you enjoyed this post and I'll see you very soon with another one !

And as usual, our last word : KIDNEYS !
